CSS Pakistan affairs: constitutional development
Pakistan's constitutional story has a few dates every candidate must know. After independence the country ran under an adapted Government of India Act 1935. The Objectives Resolution, moved by Liaquat Ali Khan, was passed by the Constituent Assembly on 12 March 1949 and set the principles for later constitutions. The first constitution came into force on 23 March 1956, declaring an Islamic Republic with a parliamentary system; it was abrogated with martial law in October 1958. The 1962 constitution under Ayub Khan was presidential, with indirect elections through Basic Democrats, and ended in 1969. The present constitution was passed on 10 April 1973 and came into force on 14 August 1973. Its major amendments include the 8th (1985, which also added the Objectives Resolution as Article 2A) and the 18th (2010), which restored the parliamentary balance, removed the Concurrent List and renamed NWFP as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. For the background, the Lahore Resolution was presented by A. K. Fazlul Huq on 23 March 1940.
