Revision summary

9th class biology: Cells and tissues

The cell theory, put forward by Schleiden (plants) and Schwann (animals) and completed by Virchow, says all living things are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and new cells come only from existing cells. Most cells are 1 to 100 micrometres across, so they are studied with microscopes. A plant cell has a cellulose cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole as well as the parts it shares with animal cells (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria). Cells with the same job group into tissues. In plants, meristematic tissue keeps dividing and makes the plant grow; permanent tissues include epidermis (protection), xylem (carries water and minerals up from the roots) and phloem (carries food from the leaves). In animals there are four tissue types: epithelial (covers and lines), connective (supports and connects; blood and bone are connective tissues), muscle (contracts) and nervous (carries messages).

  1. Q1 · Parcha original · Sample

The cell theory was put forward by:

    • A. Schleiden and Schwann
    • B. Robert Hooke and Newton
    • C. Darwin and Wallace
    • D. Mendel and Morgan
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Schleiden and Schwann

Matthias Schleiden (plants, 1838) and Theodor Schwann (animals, 1839) proposed that all living things are made of cells. Rudolf Virchow later added that new cells come only from existing cells.

Which plant tissue carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves?

    • A. Phloem
    • B. Epidermis
    • C. Xylem
    • D. Cork
    Show answer

    Answer: C. Xylem

Xylem carries water and dissolved minerals upwards from the roots. Phloem carries food (sugars) made in the leaves to other parts of the plant.

  3. Q3 · Parcha original · Sample

    Phloem tissue transports:

    • A. Water only
    • B. Food made in the leaves
    • C. Oxygen
    • D. Minerals from the soil
    Show answer

Answer: B. Food made in the leaves

Phloem carries dissolved food, mainly sucrose, from the leaves to growing parts and storage organs (translocation). Water and minerals move in the xylem.

Which animal tissue covers the body surface and lines its cavities?

    • A. Muscle tissue
    • B. Nervous tissue
    • C. Connective tissue
    • D. Epithelial tissue
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Epithelial tissue

Epithelial tissue forms the skin's outer layer and lines organs such as the stomach and intestines, protecting them and controlling absorption and secretion.

  5. Q5 · Parcha original · Sample

Meristematic tissue in plants consists of cells that:

    • A. Store food only
    • B. Are dead and hollow
    • C. Keep dividing to produce new cells
    • D. Carry water
    Show answer

Answer: C. Keep dividing to produce new cells

Meristems, found at root and shoot tips (apical) and in stems (lateral), are made of small cells that keep dividing, so the plant can grow in length and girth.

Blood is classified as which type of tissue?

    • A. Connective tissue
    • B. Epithelial tissue
    • C. Muscle tissue
    • D. Nervous tissue
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Connective tissue

Blood is a fluid connective tissue: its cells float in a liquid matrix (plasma). It connects body parts by carrying oxygen, food, wastes and hormones.

The size of most cells is measured in:

    • A. Centimetres
    • B. Kilometres
    • C. Micrometres
    • D. Metres
    Show answer

    Answer: C. Micrometres

Most cells are between about 1 and 100 micrometres (1 μm = 10⁻⁶ m) across, too small to see without a microscope.

  8. Q8 · Parcha original · Sample

The cell wall of a plant cell is mainly made of:

    • A. Protein
    • B. Chitin
    • C. Lipids
    • D. Cellulose
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Cellulose

Plant cell walls are made mainly of cellulose fibres, which give the cell shape and strength. Fungal walls contain chitin instead.
