Revision summary

Computer MCQs in job tests cover hardware, memory, number systems, shortcuts and the internet. The CPU (central processing unit) is the brain: it carries out instructions. Memory is primary (RAM, which is volatile and loses its contents without power, and ROM, which keeps them) or secondary (hard disks, SSDs, flash drives). Storage sizes: 1 byte = 8 bits; 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, then MB, GB and TB, each 1,024 times larger. Binary uses only 0 and 1; convert by place values 8, 4, 2, 1 (so 10 is 1010 and 7 is 0111). Common shortcuts: Ctrl + C copy, Ctrl + X cut, Ctrl + V paste, Ctrl + Z undo, Ctrl + Y redo, Ctrl + S save, Ctrl + P print. Internet terms: HTTP is the HyperText Transfer Protocol and HTTPS its secure form; a URL is a web address; an IP address identifies a device on a network. Learn abbreviations in full, because options often change one word.

Which type of memory loses its contents when the power is switched off?

    • A. ROM
    • B. Hard disk
    • C. RAM
    • D. Flash drive

    • C. 16 bits
    • D. 1024 bits
    Show answer

    Answer: B. 8 bits

A byte is 8 bits. A kilobyte is 1,024 bytes (in the binary convention).

    • C. 1110
    • D. 1010
    Show answer

    Answer: D. 1010
