Revision summary

The English section of most job tests checks vocabulary in four ways: synonyms, antonyms, idioms and spelling, plus one-word substitutions. For synonyms and antonyms, first decide whether the word is positive or negative and what part of speech it is, then remove options that do not match; candid (honest, frank), scarce (rare; opposite abundant) and transparent (opposite opaque) are typical. Idioms cannot be worked out word by word, so learn them in a sentence: "bury the hatchet" is to make peace, "a blessing in disguise" is something good that seemed bad at first, "once in a blue moon" is very rarely. Spelling questions favour double letters (accommodation, committee, occurrence) and -ible/-able endings. One-word substitutions: illiterate (cannot read or write), illegible (cannot be read), omnipotent (all-powerful). Reading widely helps more than memorising lists, but ten new words a day adds up quickly.
